Assemblywoman Loni Hancock was elected to the Assembly in November 2002. Since then she has been able to accomplish many things that are both practical and progressive for all Californians:

• As Chair of the Natural Resources Committee, Loni co-authored and helped pass the nation’s most aggressive law to combat global warming.

• To help prepare our young people for the jobs of the future, Loni authored California’s exciting new law to expand hands-on learning and career technical education so that we can better prepare our young people for college and careers and lower the unacceptably high dropout rate. • To reduce the influence of money in politics, Loni put real campaign finance reform (Clean Money) on the state’s agenda and has reintroduced AB 583 this session.

• Assemblywoman Hancock co-authored the universal health care bill (SB 840) and will be working as a member of the Health Committee to design the next step in health policy reform.

In addition to these policy advances, Assemblywoman Hancock was forced to fight important rear-guard battles to protect our values and quality of life. Loni led the fight to stop the expansion of new gambling casinos in urban areas – such as the proposed Casino San Pablo right off Highway 80. She spent several months in 2005 leading a grassroots campaign to defeat Governor Schwarzenegger’s costly special election that targeted our civil rights. And, while serving on the Budget Committee, Loni was able to block many of Gov. Schwarzenegger’s proposed cuts to health care. She hopes to find new avenues to serve our communities and our State in her third term in the Assembly. You will hear more about these in the near future.
