AUTHOR NORMAN SOLOMON DISCUSSES THE CHALLENGES AHEAD FOR PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRATS IN THE OBAMA ERA
At the April 17th meeting of the Lamorinda Democratic Club, Norman Solomon, author and nationally syndicated columnist on media and politics, placed the current political circumstances in a historical context, and offered thoughts on how progressives can move the Democratic Party — and the politics of the United States — in a more progressive direction. Solomon described how former Democratic U.S. Presidents have felt compelled to shift toward a centrist position upon election, much to the chagrin of their Progressive base. He warned that as a result of this trend, President Obama, too, may shy away from throwing his full support behind such issues such as the Employee Free Choice Act. During his talk, Solomon also expressed concern that, like Lyndon B. Johnsonâs invasion of Vietnam to exhibit toughness toward Communism, President Obama may be invading Afghanistan, to avoid being labeled as the president who lost the âWar on Terror.â?
