The Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific Action Fund hosts "Love & Politics: Planned Parenthood Style" from 6:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, February 17, at VESU in Walnut Creek.
The event's featured speaker is Ace Smith, who most recently managed Attorney General Kamala Harris' successful campaign last year. Former Assembly Speaker and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown lauded Smith as the "political heavyweight of the year" for managing Harris' victory, which was unexpected by many pundits.
The stakes are high. As the invitation explains:
With two-thirds of the U.S. House now anti-choice, anti-women's health extremists have reached a new low. Instead of focusing on the economy as they promised, they have introduced two bills that would hurt women. The first bill would strip Planned Parenthood of funds to provide preventive health care, including birth control and family planning.
The second bill, the Smith bill, would take away the health benefits women have today, banning private health insurance for abortion even in many cases of rape and when the woman's life is in danger. The New York Times wrote earlier this week, "This is a reckless effort to cripple an irreplaceable organization out of pure politics."
